Buena Vista MUN
A Premiere Delegation
2012 marks the second year that Buena Vista Middle School students will participate in the California YMCA Model United Nations Conference!A Premiere Delegation
California YMCA Youth & Government offers the Model United Nations (MUN) program for 6th-8th grade students. The Facebook Page for CAL YMCA is here.
Mrs. C. tells us that ALL BV SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS are offering extra credit to students participating in the MUN Delegation!
The MUN program is a simulation of the “real-life” United Nations.
Participants in MUN take part in some of the activities the real U.N. participates in. Delegates research, debate and establish policies, treaties and resolutions focusing on international issues, including disputes between countries, peace-keeping responsibilities, border crisis, stabilizing financial markets and dealing with hunger, disease and poverty.
Participants meet in local groups called delegations.
Delegations are formed through YMCAs, schools, churches, or other youth-affiliated programs. Delegations must have an adult Advisor who meets the volunteer criteria as any regulations set forth by the state office.
Delegations spend their time preparing for two statewide conferences.
The first statewide conference takes place at Camp Roberts, a National Guard Base north of Paso Robles, California. This conference serves as participants introduction to MUN and is a unique learning experience. The Training Conference curriculum includes a thorough orientation of the program and organs, as well as core value-building workshops that focus on culture acceptance, public speaking, and leadership skills. Ambassadors also receive an introduction to the staff, role training, and a chance to meet program participants from other YMCAs.
The Model United Nations Summit is the programs primary conference. This four-day conference is held in Irvine, California at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Ambassadors are given a chance to put their research and practice to work as they perform their roles and explore how the United Nations is run. Attending, student Ambassadors take on the roles of UN organ members, chairs, and presiding officers. In this unique experience, they deal with international issues that affect our world.
